Human Powered Vehicle Program

At Kurnai College, the Human Powered Vehicle (HPV) Program offers students a unique and exciting opportunity to combine teamwork, design, fitness, and innovation. The program challenges students to design, build, and race recumbent trikes that are entirely powered by human strength.

In the Classroom

The HPV program isn’t just about racing, it’s about learning. Students develop real-world skills across a range of areas including:

  • STEM and engineering, via designing and maintaining their vehicles
  • Teamwork and communication, working collaboratively in pit crews and on-track teams
  • Health and physical education, through endurance training and riding
  • Creative problem-solving, as they adapt to technical and race-day challenges

Racing and Representation

Kurnai College’s HPV teams compete in several practice sessions as well as the Energy Breakthrough Event at Maryborough. These events test not just speed, but endurance, strategy, and teamwork, with students competing against schools from across the state.

Every race is a celebration of effort and innovation, showcasing the creativity and dedication of our students and staff.

Building Community and Pride

The HPV program is one of Kurnai College’s signature experiences. HPV fosters a strong sense of belonging, as each team member plays a vital role, whether as a rider, designer, mechanic, or supporter. Staff, volunteers and the local community partners also play a huge part in keeping the program rolling.
