Starting secondary school is an exciting milestone and at Kurnai College, we are committed to ensuring every student makes a confident and positive transition. As a multi-campus college, we take pride in knowing our students and providing the support they need to feel safe, connected and ready to learn from day one.

At Kurnai College, we recognise that every student’s transition journey is unique. With strong partnerships, personalised support, and engaging experiences, we help every student start secondary education with confidence.

A Personalised Approach

Kurnai College has strong, established relationships with our local primary schools. Each year, our transition team works closely with Grade 6 teachers through detailed meetings to understand every student’s academic progress, wellbeing needs, strengths and interests.

For students joining us from outside our local area, we connect directly with their primary schools to ensure a smooth and well-supported transition.

Supporting Every Student

Our Junior Campus structure at Morwell and Churchill is designed to provide a supportive and welcoming environment for Year 7 students.

Each student is supported by:

  • A Home Group teacher they see each day.
  • Dedicated Year Level and Transition Leaders.
  • A consistent learning environment, with many classes located within the same area.

This structure helps students build strong relationships, develop a sense of belonging and feel confident as they begin their secondary school journey.

Transition Timeline

Communication with confirmed Year 7 students and families begins from Term 3 in the year prior to enrolment. This ensures families feel informed, supported and connected well before the school year begins.

Transition Activities

Kurnai College offers a range of meaningful transition experiences designed to build confidence, reduce anxiety and familiarise students with secondary school life.

These include:

  • Secondary Experience Program
    Local Grade 5 and 6 students participate in engaging on-campus activities, experiencing learning at Kurnai College.
  • Primary School Visits
    Kurnai College staff and student leaders visit local primary schools to share insights, answer questions and build connections.
  • Orientation Days
    Held in Term 4, these important days allow students to meet their teachers, connect with peers and experience a typical day at their new school.
  • Information Sharing Meetings
    Detailed transition meetings with primary schools ensure we understand and plan for each student’s individual needs.
  • Advanced Learning Program (ALPs) Testing
    Students who demonstrate a strong work ethic and the capacity to achieve excellent academic results may be invited to participate in ALPs testing as part of the transition process.
  • Extended Transition Program
    Additional transition opportunities are provided for students who may benefit from extra time and support.
  • Year 7 First Day Program
    Our Year 7 students begin the school year with a dedicated program designed to help them settle in, build relationships and learn about the opportunities ahead.
  • Year 7 Welcome BBQ
    Early in Term 1, students and families are invited to attend a welcome BBQ, providing a relaxed opportunity to connect with staff, meet other families and strengthen the sense of community.
